When I first brought my business building efforts online I had no proper understanding of any of these terms. I was totally clueless as to how vital it was that I have a true understanding of them and how crucial this would ultimately be to the success of my business.

It took me longer than I’m willing to admit, but thankfully I now have a much greater handle on most of this stuff.

SEO Let’s start with SEO (Search Engine Optimization)…basically it’s what Google returns when a search is  done on a keyword phrase (Search Term). When a search is done the top 10 sites end up on page 1, they get all the traffic. Everyone else is basically going broke!

You’ll typically find company sites are down around page 5 or worse. SEO manipulates search results so you can get to page #1 and #2. Achieve this and your site will get more traffic, more free leads and ultimately more $.

Let’s have a look at 3 components that will help your site sing.

  1. On-Page SEO (on your website)…they start with your Title Tags, Meta Description with Keywords, every page focuses on a unique set of keywords.
  2. Off-Page SEO (link building)…getting “Human Votes” (links), more links equals Higher Ranking in most cases which push you up in the search results.
  3. Owning Your own Website (blog)…when you have your site organized by Categories/Keywords/Sections.

If you bought into a business and you’re only using your companies replicated website, then you’re on page 5 or worse!…you need to own and host your own site/blog.

So what Keywords do I choose and try to rank for?…What is “The Hierarchy” of these Keywords?

If you’d like a more visual explanation, check out this quick video.

To see where your at run a search for your name @ http://namechk.com if you have a fairly common name (no offense intended ;-) you may need to tweek it with a underscore or hyphen so you still come up on a search.

  • Your Name… It’s crucial you rank for your own name first!…in the past you could have someone opt-in to your capture page via SEO, pay per click, social media or advertising and they would start to receive your newsletter which offers value, builds trust and eventually exposes them to your primary business. You stood a good chance of earning $’s from a certain percentage of people on that list via a product sale, affiliate commission or they became a new rep .

The problem now is with the web now being more Social , anyone considering joining you in your primary business only needs to run a search on your name looking for a little “Social Proof”, you will  either show up as a newbie or the kind of leader they’re looking for and  can trust. If you don’t own page 1, you’ve just lost all trust and credibility and you may well have lost a prospective new business partner :-( .

  • Your Company Name…position yourself as a leader, not many people are doing this. If you are exposing people on your list to your company, your name should be coming up in a company related search, try to get ranked for any company related terms anything specific to your company, their products, info products or services.

If you’re in Amway or Herbalife it’s going to be a fair bit harder, your may need to try to rank for some of the bigger leaders names and piggy back off them, just make sure your not saying anything negative, just edify them. Newer companies will be less competitive/easier to rank for.  As far as a prospects/leads go looking to join your company, if they find you by doing this kind of search, then they don’t come much better. :-)

  • Other Company Names/Terms and products…this works well because new people searching for a particular company will find you, just don’t try to convert them. Be positive, talk about other leaders, systems and products. Just say good things, provide value and don’t be negative…(Don’t Sell!)

So what’s the Purpose of this last point?

  1. You’re trying to attract people with a willingness to buy, have a history of buying, may have joined another opportunity and are looking for something better.
  2. To attract people who are unsure, still considering their options and might decide you’re a better fit (based on your Attraction Marketing Model) and will consider yours.
  3. You just want to answer the questions they already have in their head and give value.
  • MLM/Direct Sales Training Products, Books & Authors...these terms are gold, they attract people looking to spend on their education. This market is wide open, you want to be ranking for new products and tools, trainers & authors, make a note of popular Generic Training products and do a review of some kind. These are all high traffic keywords and still attainable,  good luck trying to rank for something like Real Estate.

Just remember this is a different kind of traffic, these people are looking to be educated and have a propensity to buy so give them Training, Newsletters, Videos, a free offer via an opt-in box on your Blog , all your best stuff. At this point your opportunity is not the focus.

  • Generic Info Seeker Keywords

Funded Proposals are perfect for this. You have a low cost educational info/training product which allows you to build relationships. By continuing to offer value and training you may just represent the leader they were looking for and they may join you in your business. If not, you earn a passive income and they get the training and resources they were after…it’s a win-win for both of you:-)

So Why SEO ?

  • SEO is not advertising…you have less liability and more credibility, people are willing to share your content if it’s good. ;-) People don’t share capture pages and SEO has at least 4x the amount of traffic than PPC.
  • The potential for a Viral Spread of your content…your goal is to build a dominant presence. A dominant presence leads to conversations, especially for people already in your pipeline. So make SEO part of your sales process, if you don’t someone else will!
  • Via Social Mediagive prospects the chance to learn about you.

Control The Buzz on Google!

Create accounts with Google Profile, Squidoo.com, Better Networker.com, Linkedin.com, Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Myspace, Ezine Articles. Make sure you use your own name for your username, no funky names…they just don’t work!

Now on your bio’s, make sure you have your name hyperlinked to at least 2 places; your Blogs home page and your About Me Page, get them both ranked! When you publish content on these other Social Networks hyperlink your name to all of your other sites across the net…no method here, just cross-link. That’s how you control info about you.

Now for a word on Rankings…not only do you rank for your name using your blog, you also get these rankings from all of your Social Media profiles. As the authority of your blog rises so too will the ranking of your Social Sites. Your blog will not only rank for your name but for any of the websites your blog is affiliated with.

What happens next is that if you have your blog well categorized and well organized as I spoke of in component #3, your categories and all the pieces of content within them will start to rank as well.

Theoretically if you wanted to rank highly for a brand name website like Magnetic Sponsoring, you could devote a section of your website solely to this. Do you think there are a lot of searches done for a name like that?…you betta believe it!

The same goes for any product, Training System, Direct Sales / MLM Company names; any keyword you wish to rank for. Providing value when reviewing will go a long way in helping you increase conversions/sales.
